Action Express Solid Despite Rain, Caution At Road America

ELKHART LAKE, WI: Action Express Racing went to Elkhart Lake and Road America this week optimistic for the Rolex Sports Car Series 250 Driven by VISIT FLORIDA. After all, at tracks the team has had opportunities to test this season, they have come away with multiple podiums — including a win and double-podium at VIR – and with a promoter test day at Road America on Wednesday, it was the perfect opportunity to develop a solid baseline for Saturday’s two-hour race.

A combination of rain during the week’s test and practice sessions, and a lack of green flag racing during Saturday’s race hindered that plan however, but a resilient effort by the team allowed the No. 5 and No. 9 Porsche-powered Rileys to salvage solid 6th and 7th place finishes, respectively.

“We just had a long way to go and a short amount of time to get there,” said driver Terry Borcheller, who replaced JC France and gave way to Joao Barbosa in the No. 9 DP. “With that caution being so long, it made the strategy very difficult for us having three drivers, but we pulled it off. We’ll take the points.”

The race was hindered early on when GT drivers Gunter Schaldach and Joe Foster were involved in a scary accident that saw Schaldach flip out of the race track, and Foster receive medical attention. Because of the lengthy caution which lasted over 50 minutes there was just over one hour of green flag racing.

“Once the race started we felt like we were in a good position, but then the long caution took that right away from us,” said team manager Gary Nelson. “We’re still getting organized with our records and the rain didn’t give us much time to sort our setup.”

It’s been a solid second season for Action Express, boasting eight top 5s and four podiums. Coming into Road America, the No. 5 DP driven by Darren Law and David Donohue had a series-high five consecutive top 5s and just missed making it six straight when Law was catching the fifth-place No. 60 DP, but ran out of laps.

With five races remaining in the season, Action Express sits third (No. 9) and fourth (No. 5) in the series standings, 40 points and 41 points behind the points leading No. 01 TELMEX/Chip Ganassi Racing DP. The series next heads to Laguna Seca on July 9.

“We feel very confident about Laguna Seca,” added Nelson. “As long as it doesn’t rain and we have time to sort out our program we should hit the ground running.”
